What to look for in IT support for a South Wales school
Schools have IT needs that a general break-fix shop isn't built for: device fleets, safeguarding, and systems that simply can't be down during lessons. Here's what to look for in a provider.
Device fleets, not single machines
A classroom set of laptops or tablets needs to be imaged consistently, tracked, and kept updated together. Look for a provider who can manage fleets, standardise the build, and refresh devices in bulk, rather than treating each one as a separate repair.
Safeguarding has to be built in
Web filtering and monitoring aren't optional in a school, they're part of your safeguarding duty and are looked at under Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). Your IT provider should configure networks and filtering with that in mind, and understand why it matters, not just install a box.
Microsoft 365, done properly
Most schools run on Microsoft 365. Proper administration, accounts, security, mailboxes and licensing handled correctly, saves staff time and closes security gaps. Ask whether the provider manages this as a matter of course.
Response time during the school day
When a system goes down mid-lesson, a two-day ticket queue is no good. Ask about average response times and same or next-day on-site call-out. Being local matters here: an engineer who can actually turn up beats a national helpdesk reading a script.
Backups and continuity
Reports, data and coursework need reliable, monitored backups and a plan for when something fails. "We think it's backing up" is not a plan. Look for monitored backups and a clear recovery approach.
Fixed, predictable budgeting
Schools budget tightly, so a fixed monthly managed plan is usually easier to plan around than unpredictable call-out bills. Make sure what's included is spelled out in plain English before you sign.
