How to choose a refurbished laptop (without getting stung)
A good refurbished laptop is one of the best-value buys in tech, if you know what to check. Here is what actually matters, from a workshop that grades and tests every machine by hand.
What "refurbished" really means
"Refurbished" is not a protected term, so it means different things from different sellers. At its best it means a machine that has been fully tested, repaired where needed, wiped and reinstalled, and honestly graded for condition. At its worst it just means "used". The difference is the testing and the grading, so always ask what has actually been done to the machine.
Understand the grade
Most reputable sellers grade cosmetically. We use a simple A/B/C scale: Grade A is like-new with little or no wear, Grade B has light marks from normal use, and Grade C is visibly worn but fully tested and working. Crucially, the grade should describe looks only, every grade should be fully functional. Ask for photos of the actual unit before you buy.
The specs that matter
- An SSD, not a hard drive. This is the single biggest difference in how fast a laptop feels. Avoid anything still on a spinning hard drive.
- 8GB of RAM minimum for everyday use, 16GB if you keep lots of browser tabs open or do any creative work.
- A recent-enough processor. An Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 from the last few generations is the sweet spot for value.
- Battery health. Batteries wear out, so ask for the measured battery health, not just "the battery works".
- Screen resolution. Full HD (1920x1080) is worth holding out for; older 1366x768 panels feel cramped.
Warranty and returns are the real safety net
A refurbished machine should come with a proper warranty and a returns window. We give a minimum 12-month warranty on refurbished laptops (upgradeable to three years), health-check the battery, and offer 14-day returns, all backed locally rather than a returns address on the other side of the country. If a seller offers only 30 or 90 days, factor that in.
Why local beats a faceless marketplace
Buying from a local workshop means you can see the machine, ask questions, and bring it back to a real person if anything is not right. You are not gambling on an unknown seller and a courier. It also means data is wiped to a proper standard in front of a business you can hold accountable.
